What is Buprenorphine?
Also known as Suboxone and Subutex, it is an FDA approved medication for office based treatment of opiate addiction. It reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings during the recovery process.

What are Opiates? A group of drugs drugs that originate from the opium poppy or that have a chemical structure like the drugs derived from opium. When introduced into the body they produce pain relief as well as psychological effects.

What is dependence? When a patient uses opiate medications for a prolonged duration of time, such as taking pain killers to treat arthritis, the body becomes physically dependent on this medication. If these medications are stopped suddenly withdrawal symptoms may occur. Instead these a patient may need to be weaned off these medications by an experienced physician.
