Our body is like a beacon that is always on alert. Pain is the bodys reaction to actual or potential tissue damage, injury, or to any external or internal pressures that the body is subjected to. Pain, therefore, is the signal given by the body to alert us that something has gone wrong. Neurons in the brain are connected to our other body parts such that when something goes wrong, these neurons release chemicals that are transported to the neurons in the brain which interprets this as pain.
Body pains fall under two general categories: acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is almost always short-lived and lasts only until healing occurs. This type of pain is often involved with wounds such as burns and cuts and mild fractures, fatigue and muscle pain. On the other hand, chronic pain, as the name suggests, is more long-lasting and frequent and may last for a few days, weeks, months or even years. The pain of arthritis is more often than not of this sort. People who suffer from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis often experience chronic pain in their limbs, knees, back, and hips.
No single method of pain relief is available since people experience arthritis pain on different levels. Doctors often prescribe a pain relief program depending on the degree of pain involved and whether it is acute or chronic.
Short-term pain relief
Arthritis may also involve acute pain especially if there is little to mild inflammation. Aspirin often works to relieve the pain immediately. However, there are other methods that one may try (but some may are best done only after consultation with your physician or doctor) Applying heat compacts to the affected area or taking a warm bath or shower may instantly help soothe the pain. On the other hand, cold compacts may also be applied to the affected area as an alternative. This can alleviate pain by relaxing the muscles and reducing the swelling in the affected area. As a precautionary measure, splints and braces can be very helpful in protecting the affected joint from further damage while transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators (TENS) can be used to block the pain or modify pain perception.
Long-term pain relief
If chronic pain is involved especially in a case of rheumatoid arthritis, long-term pain relief is more essential and successful. Medication in the form of drugs are usually prescribed and should be taken for a specified duration of time or until the patient ceases to feel any pain from arthritis. These drugs may be one of the following:
1. biological response modifiers or BRMs
2. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs
3. Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs)
BRMs are specially-made drugs that are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. These drugs help reduce inflammation in the tendons, joints, or muscles and alleviate pain by modifying pain perception. NSAIDs produce pretty much the same effects: pain and inflammation reduction. When the patient fails to respond to NSAIDs, DMARDs are used but only with doctors approval and careful monitoring.
More natural ways of coping with arthritis pain involve a balanced and healthy diet program as well as a regular exercise program to strengthen the different joints in the body. This can also be used as rehabilitative therapies to arthritis caused by traumatic injuries. However, there are some select cases where surgery may be necessary to relieve the patient from severe arthritis pains. Surgery often involves the removal of the synovium, realignment of a joint, or even the substitution or replacement of a damaged joint.
If you are suffering from osteoarthritis joint pain, a recent study by a USA laboratory in 2006, and reported by The New England Journal of Medicine showed that glucosamine chondroitin, reduced arthritis pain in those suffering moderate to severe joint pain more effectively than Celebrex. If you are interested in trying this therapy, one of the most popular leading brands of Liquid Glucosamine is Synflex Liquid Glucosamine. The liquid form is faster acting in getting to the root of the problem because the absorption rate is higher than that of pills. Many who take Syn-flex liquid glucosamine have reported success in as little as 7 to 10 days compared to 6 weeks for pills. Synflex liquid glucosamine requires only once a day dosing (1/4 oz.) and each 8 oz. bottle contains a full months supply.
