The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of blogs fail to make more than a few pennies for the blogger. Why is this? There are several reasons. For starters, not every topic can be monetized. Some blogs are just too narrow in their focus. Other blogs cover a topic that just isn't generating much revenue at the time. In some cases, the blogger just isn't patient enough, and quits blogging before she actually earns money blogging. Some bloggers are horrible writers, and so no one who visits their blog can trust anything they write, and won't return. Finally, some bloggers just don't know how to go about actually making money blogging.

Quality content. If your blog is boring, or if your blog isn't appealing to look at, no one will want to ever come back. You need to provide your readers with a quality experience. Your blog needs to speak to a felt need. If your blog doesn't answer a question, fix a problem or entertain your reader, your content is not quality content.
Effective marketing. There are hundreds of different ways you can go about marketing your blog for free. Some of these methods are relatively simple, such as leaving comments on other blogs. Some of these methods may serve a dual purpose, such as writing articles for an article directory so that folks will browse from your About Me page back to your web site. Whatever marketing methods you choose for your blog, you need to be able to accurately measure their effectiveness and dump the ones that don't work.
Finally, you have to have worthwhile monetization strategies. The affiliate program at Amazon, for example, is one of the oldest affiliate programs on the Internet. It is also one of the worst paying. At 4%, you're going to have to sell a lot of books for Amazon to really make money with your blog. Instead, you will have to find higher paying affiliate programs, or perhaps sell a product of your own.
Ultimately, there is no guarantee that you will make money with your blog. Following these principles, however, will give you a fighting chance.
