Gentlemen Prefer Blogs

September 7th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

According to a recent survey, gentlemen prefer blogs to the tune of 75 percent; roughly 25 percent of blog frequenters are female. But I want to invite all you ladies to invade the male space. What exactly is a blog? Well, it is an online journal or tabla rasa in the Internet zone where average people can post articles and comments, expostulate, and generally schmooze about topics ranging from food to politics.

It is also a retaliation against what bloggers call MSM; you know, mainstream media, such as CNN, Fox News, and the New York Times. The argument is that MSM is controlled by corporations and other insiders; the blog provides the opportunity for the little guys, or gals, to make their otherwise inaudible opinions known.

I stumbled upon this process when Googling for “Schopenhauer.” It turned out Mayor Jerry Brownformerly the Governor of Californiahad just started his own blog. The philosopher that he is, he had made comments about Schopenhauer, as well as about teen drag racing through Oakland, curfews for ex-convicts, and freedom-of-speech issues.

I figured I would chime in without telling my fellow bloggers that I have a regular column in MSM. Someone had already blasted Jerry for having the nerve to start a blog when he can be heard on O’Reilly’s Factor and Hardball.

I did not tiptoe into the medium, as I should have, but rushed in by calling America a land of parrots since 9/11, with only one linea salute to the flag. This drew fire, and I was called a moron by some moron in the blogosphere. How dare he? He was tarnishing the reputation of blogging, straddling a fine line, butchering his chance of being graced by my deep, insightful words again.

I felt better a day later after reading the 255 entries on this one topic and finding that the anonymous and well-known–from some guy named “Smiling Simian in Shades” to Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, Noam Chomsky, and even Jerry himself–had all been called equally insulting names. If Jerry–who is brilliant, in my estimation–can be attacked, it was not a big deal anymore.

The next day Jerry posted a comment about political extremism, and I was ecstatic because I knew it was my chance to delve into my favorite topic: dead philosophers. Both he and I seem to enjoy this popular hobby.

When I mentioned how I am particularly a devotee of 17th century philosopher Baruch Spinoza, some guy who called himself “Bill Gates” (yeah, right) attacked Spinoza as “having been discredited long ago.” Excuse me? It’s one thing to fire bullets at me, but I will not stand for vitriol against my future husbandyou know, in my next life.

“Bill Gates” went on to tell me to go live with the animals. Although he was referring to the furry kind, I politely replied, “No. I don’t want to live with you.”

Then someone named HA offered his two cents by insinuating that my carefully reasoned arguments were tedious. I asked, “Is this a mere joke as your name implies? Ha ha, HA.”

Blogging is more than entertainment. It is a way to keep shelves stocked in the marketplace of ideas. It allows brave political souls to get input from their constituents about public policy. Eight million people have blogs and 3% of Americans read them daily.

Ladies, maybe you’ll join the trend. Bill Gates is waiting for you.

Where is Blogging Headed in 2007?

September 6th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

Blogging has been around for decades in the form of paper journals created by the aspiring minds of the worlds individuals. Privacy used to be a must-have commodity as diary owners kept their personal autobiographies behind lock and key.

However, the online version developed and exploded. Privacy became an item of the past and flaunting your personal life became the popular digital accessory. As negative as it seems, people simply love to read about other people.

Have we stretched the blogging popularity to its maximum or will we continue to see blogging flourish in new directions during 2007?

Where Did Blogging Begin?

Blogging was birthed in 1994 when college student, Justin Hall made the first ever internet blog. In 1977, Jorn Barger first used Weblog as a term for logging the web. Finally, in April of 1999, Programmer Peter Merholz shortens Weblog to blog. The rest of the internet caught on and as we say: the rest is history.

Why is it so Popular?

Blogs are popular for several reasons. For one, any non-technical person can use a blog without prior HTML knowledge. Secondly, blogs open the door for anyone to become a private reporter, whether they were reporting their normal daily activities or the latest breaking news.

Perhaps the biggest reason blogging became popular is due to the social aspect. Features such as blogrolls, permalinks and trackbacks make it easier for the world to find a particular blog. Also, we get excited when we can take a step into a life unlike our own when it wouldnt be physically possible except via the digital world.

Blog Wars: Attack Of The Splogs

September 6th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

The engines, namely Google, are striking back at sploggers and their malevolent creations, the splogs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splog

According to media reports Google has taken measures to impede those attempting to use its Blogger service to create and maintain fake blogs. http://www.marketingvox.com/archives/2005/10/24/
google_trying_captcha_to_obstruct_sploggers/index.php

Blogger’s official corporate blog mentioned the “spamalanche” that has search engines, blog search engines and net advertisers in a tizzy. http://buzz.blogger.com/

They are now working together to eliminate the economic incentive for splogs by identifying them at their source - by domain - and not indexing them.

Can CAPTCHA Stop The Spamalanche?

The “CAPTCHA” test is a method by which automated programs that post or create blogs can be foiled–where the user is asked to type in a sequence of letters from a line that people can read, but computers can’t decipher.

Blogger is currently working on ways to reduce false positives and ensure that once a blog with word verification has been established as legitimate, the blogger will no longer need to solve the CAPTCHA.

Why Create Splogs In The First Place?

Splogs generally fall into one of two categories, notes Mediapost: Link farms, which pack hundreds or even thousands of blogs with gibberish or recycled content, and contain multiple links to a particular Web site, which allow them to game Google’s PageRank algorithm, creating artificially high organic search rankings; and spam blogs that simply recycle content with AdSense or other advertising on them in the hopes of making money from errant users clicking on the ads. http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=35418

Splogs most often get their content by scraping - the process of sending an electronic copying bot to take everything it sees, recreating it on an unlimited number of instant documents, writes Jim Hedger. http://news.stepforth.com/blog/2005/10/splogs-scraping-adsense-fraud.php

Literally millions of instant sites have sprung up over the past twelve months, most of which are free-hosted Blogs, containing content scraped out from the original sites.

Why Splogs Are Evil

An article in the Wall Street Journal notes that the splogs are a big source of frustration for several search-engine start-ups that focus on blog searches, such as IceRocket.com LLC, Technorati Inc. and Feedster Inc. http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB112968552226872712-h37m_YUT3BqCvLRfhl6rqzKObnE_20061019.html?mod=rss_free

Jim Hedger makes some excellent points about why splogs are a menace to genuine bloggers, notably that:

  • Splogs are content thieves and can cause honest webmasters to get caught up in technical and financial issues by losing search engine listings and advertising revenue
  • Splogs use up blogging resources, especially those of Blogger and Blogspot
  • Slogs clog up the search results with crappy and irrelevant sites.
  • Splogs devalue the legitimate uses of blogs as communications and marketing tools
  • Splogs might lead future blog readers or users away from the growing blogosphere.

Pete Blackshaw, chief marketing officer of Intelliseek, a firm that monitors and searches blog content, said that spam blogs make it harder to convince companies to blog. http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=35418

What Can You Do About Splogs?

Its not just the engines that are fighting back. There are a few knights in shining armour out there, like Frank Gruber, a blogger in Chicago who became frustrated while encountering splogs in search engines, and recently launched a site called SplogReporter, reports the Wall Street Journal. http://www.splogreporter.com

SplogReporter lets anyone submit the Web address of a suspected splog. Gruber has created an index to rate how “spammy” a blog is, and is building a database of splogs that he may share with search engines.

Google engineer, Matt Cutts, provided tips on how to report spam to Google on his blog. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/update-jagger-contacting-google/ Use his tips to report spam and do your bit to clean up the blogosphere.

I first wrote about spam-blogs here, and recommended that instead of using blogs for spam, marketers must focus on building content-rich sites and getting high-value links to them. http://www.blog-maniac.com/spam-blogging.htm

Don’t restrict yourself to just the SEO benefits of blogging. Appreciate the value that blogs can add to your marketing and public relations strategy and use them the way they were meant to be used - as cutting-edge and “cool” tools for communicating with your target audience.

What are Blogs and How Do You Profit from Them?

September 5th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

‘Blogs’ or ‘Blogging’ have existed for several years and there are still many people who don’t know what one is and how important it is to making you money.

A blog is a web log. It’s used to add contents of a diary or news by the owner (blogger). For example, I may want to blog about the latest affiliate programs there are and ones that have good commissions as soon as I know about them. People can visit my website and see new contents on my website regularly.

A blog should contain information about a similar topic. For example, cars, computers, stamps etc… The good thing about blogs is that you can write whatever you want on it. Your visitors can even comment on what they think about a particular blog. With a blog you do not need to have any programming experience. You can update a blog easily by just typing what you want just like with a word processor. What an easy way to update a website.

So now we know what a blog is, what’s so good about a blog? Why are so many talking about it?

Owners have found that updating fresh content to their websites has been made easier by using blogging software. Before blogs were popular, people had to create the content, get it transferred into HTML by the programmer, and then uploaded to the website. All this hassle is gone with blogging.

Perhaps, the most important thing about having a blog is that the search engines love them. Yes, search engines love new content. It means a website is not static, therefore search engines will visit that website often and get them indexed. If you have a blog, search engines will have your website in their listings quickly.

Blogging should be done regularly by your business. The customers should have the feeling that your blog will be updated regularly so that they will feel the need to visit often. If your blog is stagnant, then people will not go back. This is not how blogs are used.

What a lot of people don’t know about blogging is that it can also help make you money. Yes - blogs can be profitable too.

One of the ways you can profit from blogs is to provide valuable content to them, and keep them regularly informed. Once you have created that relationship with them, you can place affiliate links within your blogs. These have to be products or services that you recommend to your readers to use. Good commission comes with using this idea.

You can even ask your readers to donate money to maintain your blog. Stress that your blog is a free service and you hope that they will support you etc…

Once you have a lot of visitors to your blogging website, you can use Google’s Adsense which shows Google’s ads on your blogs. When your visitors click on those ads, you’ll get a percentage of the payment for each click. With a lot of visitors, this will add up to a nice check every month.

You can even have an advertising space at the top of your blog. Advertise this space. You can charge people weekly to advertise what they want. You may even have more than one space for advertisements. The more popular and more visitors your blog gets, the more you can charge for these advertising spaces.

The blog http://www.home-business-setup.com shows the ways in which money can be made which I’ve discussed throughout this article. Notice the AdSense at the top of the page and also the text link which other people will pay for once they know the blog gets traffic.
Just shows that there are so many ways to profit from blogging that it would be crazy if we don’t start now.

How To Build A Multimillion Dollar Empire Using No Cost Blogs

September 5th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

Today blogging is one of the most profitable ways that you can start an online business. In this article I would like to go over some proven ways that you can build your own blogging empire.

I suggest you find an idea that you enjoy so that you frequently can write about this. Once you have chosen your topic you need to setup your blog using either Blogger or Wordpress. I suggest that you get a professional design done by a graphics designer as this will be your business identity and first impressions count.

Once you have your domain name registered and your blog setup it is time to write frequently on your chosen topic. Make sure that you contribute high quality posts that people will want to read.

After you are producing high quality content on your website you need to ensure that you are able to monetize your traffic. You can do this in several ways. At the moment the most popular option is Google Adsense. Apply for an Adsense account and add the html code to your website. As people start clicking on the adverts you will start making money. However, you usually have to wait to make more than $100 before you will get paid. Alternatively review popular products related to your niche market including your affiliate link.

Finally, you need to make sure that you get enough traffic for your site to become profitable. Post frequently to forums including a link to your blog in the signature. Submit your site to the directories and blog posts to web 2 sites like Digg for additional traffic. Rinse and repeat the steps I have outlined to dominate many markets.

Are you really interested in driving massive traffic to your website?

Trapped By Time - Try Blogging Your Way To Freedom

September 5th, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

I have always been an early bird and am very good at getting up in the mornings. I know it’s not the case for everyone though, and often see people drag themselves, bleary eyed past my house on their way to catch the morning train.

I feel sorry for them, especially when the weather is bad and know they’ll arrive for work cold and wet. In the summer too, when the weather is warm and sunny, they’ll be stuck indoors trading their time for money making someone else richer.

It’s not just the working either. Many people spend several hours travelling to and from their place of work, and there’s a lot more to consider than just the pay packet when you are offered a “job”. The word “freedom” springs to mind, or rather lack of.

Of course we all have to work and it’s such a shame so few people actually enjoy what they are doing. I think I can count on one hand those who have told me over the years that they “love their job”.

However, love it or loath it, a “job” tends to take up a vast proportion of a person’s life, and it comes as quite a shock when one isn’t available. Financially it makes things difficult, but also many people often miss the social side of working. Of course not everyone gets on with all their work colleagues, but we are social creatures and used to being with others.

The main problem for most people who have no “job” is they find themselves with too much time on their hands and no idea how to fill it. That’s one of the reasons many people seem to change once they retire and although we might all say we can’t wait to give up work, the reality is often quite different.

Men, in particular, find retirement difficult because if their wives are at home they usually do the domestic chores and often complain their husbands are now always “under their feet”.

If a person has a hobby or interest, that obviously helps considerably, and so does having plenty of income. Everything costs money and people live a long time these days. Unless you have made wise investments over the years, any retirement nest egg can soon disappear.

That’s where blogging can be such a wonderful opportunity. If anyone can use a computer and can type e-mails then it opens a whole new world. It’s easy to learn and anyone can do it regardless of age.

You can set up a blog for FREE, and although you don’t have to blog to make money, it can certainly provide a very lucrative passive income once you understand the process.

It’s something you can do from home, or anywhere with a computer access. You also work the hours you choose and that means just one thing - Freedom!

Increase Business Blog Traffic

Blogging has revolutionized the way information is shared through the Internet. What once was a word wide web updated by only a few savvy coders, quickly became a sea of contributors offering their opinion on virtually any topic.

Business blogging in particular is gaining steam as more businesses are finding its utility in attracting more of their core target audience. Although monetization of blogging is still up for grabs, businesses arent waiting around to find out what the buzz is all about.

If you are already a blogger, you probably know how much work it takes to maintain and engage your readers. This isnt just an ordinary website with an about us page, its an organic living tool which must be updated on a regular basis to feed its hungry audience. But even if you are good at writing, that alone wont guarantee success. Online promotion is a critical if you want your business blog to be found and read.

So how do you get more visitors?

First and foremost, you must understand the importance of a good title of your blog posts. Not only does it inform the reader to what they are about to read, but also it is a tool for search engines to find and rank your content in the billions of documents lying out on the Web. Dont just pick something that sounds good, but try to include important keywords that web searchers would typically to find your information.

Make your content useful and not salesy. Are you an authority on your topic or are you trying to sell me something? This is important if you value return visitors. Blog resourceful information and leave your company website for the latter.

Blog Directories and Search Making your blog content available to others is surprisingly easy. All it takes is some time and a hard-hitting sales pitch. A search on Google for blog directories yields millions of results where you can submit your blog such as Technorati.

If youre trying to hit a niche category like business, other niche directory resources such as the Business Blog directory by iBlog Business might also be worth a look at.

Take some time to identify some of the best directories that fit your needs and write a keyword rich title and a clear concise statement as to what your blog includes. (10 words or less is a good rule of thumb)

Best of all, search engines love links from directories and will use them to index your postings in a timely manner. Be patient and the traffic will come.

The Major Search Engines Search engines are no doubt important for any web strategy. As I stated above, good titles and directories are a good way to be found. But if you really want to excel your readership, there are a couple of key items to keep in mind that search engines find useful:

  1. Update your content regularly. Search engines will find your website more resourceful if you update it on a regular basis. This is a shear advantage over traditional Websites because blogs typically post information continually.
  2. Improve your link popularity. Request links from blogs in similar industries and dont forget to show your link appreciation in return. Write articles and publish them at popular article websites with a link back to your site. Submit press releases to online news sources for enhanced pickup and link building. Find and support community forums that could aid your authority.
  3. Include a site map. Publish a page with a list of links that direct to all of your internal pages. Also, consider using Google Sitemaps for enhanced indexing by Google.
  4. Optimize your postings by including important keyword phrases in your URL extensions and links.
  5. Repeat keywords from your title early in your posting to reinforce your posts content and keyword density.

Blogger Resources Blogging is a community that can be rewarding to belong to. But just like any social group, insider jargon must be learned to fully participate and appreciate the community. Here are some of the bare essentials that you may find useful in the blogosphere:

  • Permalinks- this is the name given to the link for any particular post so that it may directly accessed or book marked. Typically, if you click on the posts title that will lead right to permalink. However, many blogging platforms and blog templates will reference permalinks differently such as permalinks, link to this post, etc.
  • Trackback URLs- if read another bloggers post and want to reference it later and let the other blogger know that you are giving them credit, a trackback is a great tool. Look at the bottom of any post and click trackback to get the URL that you wish to reference in the future. When you enter your post, put in this URL in your trackback field and when you submit, your blurb will appear on the other bloggers post as comment.
  • Blogrolling- a collection of blogs that you frequently read that are listed on your homepage. By noticing other bloggers, you in effect are sharing other resources that your audience might find useful. Your visitors can also learn a great deal about you by the very things you read.

Summary As business blogging gains traction, promoting and differentiating oneself in the sea of Websites will be increasingly more difficult. However, business blogging offers a unique opportunity for those who are willing to make a long-term commitment in building a valuable community. As more businesses find their way to the blogosphere, the future of the business community looks bright!

Blogrolls, Needles, And Haystacks — A Conundrum

September 3rd, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

Now here is something to ponder, perhaps if you are feeling bored with Christmas TV or the endless magazine puzzles we seem to get at this time of year.

Everyone knows that finding good information on the internet is like finding a needle in a haystack, right? In fact, it’s worse than that because when you find a needle at least you know it’s a needle, as opposed to something masquerading as a needle; you don’t have to go looking for objective proof that it’s a needle.

So why do so many “edubloggers” think that the concept of blogrolls, which are lists of blogs that subscribers to a blog subscribe to, and similar devices (such as, in effect, shared favorites) are so wonderful?
(Incidentally, an edublogger is someone who blogs about education. The world of educational blogging is usually referred to as the edublogosphere as opposed to the blogosphere, which is what the rest of the blogging world inhabits. Come on, please keep up at the back!)

I can see the (superficial) attraction of having many more potential sources of information, but if finding good information is like finding a needle in a haystack, what is the point of increasing the size of the haystack?

The best thing about them is that you don’t have to spend a penny on them, all you need to do is use a little bit of time and energy, and if you aren’t prepared to that do build up your blog, give up now.

Leaving Comments on Other Blogs - leave at least 10 comments on blogs you have never commented on before, every day. Do not just respond with only one line, write something that shows you have read the article and make it reasonable intelligent.

Submit All Your Article to the Following Social Sites - It goes without saying that the articles, which you publish on your blog, are of a good quality. Submit all your articles to the following’ Deli.icio.us, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Technorati.

Write One Controversial or Celebrity Based Article Every week - I would recommend writing about something or someone that has been in the news a lot in that particular week.

Self Publisher PR Basics You Must Understand

September 2nd, 2008 by admin in Make Blog

To successfully replace all their other marketing efforts with image building and PR marketing, a self publisher needs to understand two very important truths about PR.

a) Good PR is Referral Marketing And Word Of Mouth

The whole objective of good PR is to get people talking and the word of mouth advertising happening. Unlike advertising that seeks to pass the message directly to the target audience PR world best as a tool that triggers off word of mouth. Human nature is such that people gossip about interesting things and controversial stuff. It is therefore absolutely important that a self publishers message falls into either or both these two categories.

b) Understanding Positioning Is Important

Positioning is really the space in the mind that the name of your business or blog occupies. The mind rather than store everything tends to edit out unimportant information. The result is that the mind will tend to remember the top three or two names in most categories. For example if you mention Colas or soft drinks, the first two names that come to mind are Coke and Pepsi. So what happens if you want to launch a new soft drink to compete with Coke and Pepsi. You will need to cleverly position it and one of the ways of doing this is by creating a new sub-category, say one for Uncolas or non-cola soft drinks like 7-Up.

Done successfully, this will mean that you will be at the top of the mind when people think of that sub category which is much easier than getting their minds to include you in their existing category lists as a number 3 or 4.

Positioning is very important in successful PR and image building more so for a self publisher who is bound to have products like email newsletters and books which will all need to be carefully positioned in the mind of the prospect to be successful.
