Holiday weight gain happens to everyone, right?
Not you.
Not this year.
Let’s make this year different. Instead of spending the whole month of January trying to lose the weight that you put on between Thanksgiving and New Years, why don’t you spend that time losing the weight that you have been carrying around for the past 5 years. In order to do this you are going to need to put a stop to holiday weight gain.
Research has shown that on average Americans are gaining weight each year - most of this weight gain occurs between October and February. Have you been gaining weight slowly over the past several years? Do you always gain a little weight during the holidays, promise yourself you’ll lose it after the first of the year but never really get around to it??
It’s okay, be honest.
The best plan is a proactive one. Let’s not put the weight on in the first place. Below I have outline 5 extremely simple steps that will help you prevent holiday weight gain.
1) Pre-Eat - The worst thing you can do is go to a holiday party on an empty stomach. This is setting yourself up for complete and utter disaster. Pre-eat before you go with a small amount of food that will increase your feeling of fullness, prevent cravings, and slow the digestion of any foods that you do eat when you go out. My top pre-eating foods are:
Small Salad - This has been consistently shown in scientific studies to reduce the amount of food you eat in the subsequent meal.
Small bowl of Vegetable Based Soup - This has also been shown in scientific studies to reduce the amount of food you eat in the subsequent meal (Note: Not cream based soups).
Apple & String Cheese - This is my personal favorite (probably because I love string cheese). The apple provides fiber and volume while the string cheese provides fat and protein. These components will signal your body that you are full and they will also slow down digestion (making you feel full longer).
2) Skip The Crackers - Most holiday parties are LOADED with breads, fried and breaded ball of cheese, meat, or vegetables, and crackers. Just say no. Loading up on these starching carbohydrates will send your blood sugar levels for a ride. This, along with the lack of fiber in these foods, will make you eat tons of them….honestly when was the last time you ate just one cracker? Exactly. Skip the crackers.
3) Shrimp, Cheese, and Veggies Please - Okay so since you aren’t allowed to eat the crackers what can you eat? Shrimp, cheese, and vegetables (no not the fried ones). Just about all holiday parties have these items. Broccoli, carrots, and whatever other vegetables that are sitting near the ranch dressing are fair game. Don’t stray away from the shrimp or cheese. These foods will provide fat and protein (remember they help with fullness). Once when I was about 10 years old, I went to my mother’s work Christmas party. I promptly sat down next to the shrimp platter and ate just about whole thing. Let’s put it this way…I ate so much shrimp that children were never invited to the Christmas party ever again (but I digress).
4) Watch Where You Stand - Whatever you do don’t be like me when I was 10 and sit next to the food. If there is food in in front of you then you are going to eat it even if you are not hungry. Take a small plate pile on some broccoli, carrots, cheese, and shrimp (notice no scallops wrapped in bacon) and go start a conversation on the other side of the room. This tip can cut down your food consumption by at least 50%.
5) Its NOT All or Nothing - So let’s say you don’t listen to the above four tips. You go to a party on an empty stomach, you eat a whole sleeve of ritz crackers, you sit at the hors d’oeuvres table, and eat more than you know you should. This is not the end of the world. As I mentioned before - I’ve done it. The important thing is what you do the next day. Don’t say “Ugh, I ate so much last night. I’ve ruined my diet. I might as well not worry about my nutrition until after the New Year.”
Don’t do that.
Instead say “Hmmm…so I ate a bunch last night. I should have listened to Mike’s tips. That’s okay. Mistakes happen. I’m going to eat what I planned to eat today and not miss any training sessions for the rest of the year.” That is how you need to talk to yourself. It happened. Vow to do better. Get back on track and move on.
There you go. My 5 simple steps to prevent holiday weight gain. Now go out and put them into action.

Will lecithin make you thin? While it appears to sound right, nutrition experts say we should discard this wrong notion since lecithin has no effect on fat. What’s more, buying supplements is a waste of money because we already have enough lecithin in our diet.
“There is quite a lot in our diet already in eggs, milk, fish, liver, and vegetable oils in general. It is used in food processing to help oil and water mix so it is present in chocolate, ice cream, margarine, many cake mixes, and baked goods. It is added to ‘instant’ powders to make them wettable and to frying oils to stop them spattering, so adding tablets to our diet will not add anything worthwhile,” according to Arnold Bender in “Health or Hoax?”
What is lecithin in the first place? It is a mixture of fats called phosphoglycerides that contain phosphate. Pure lecithin called phosphatidyl choline is found only in research laboratories while the commercial one is an impure mixture of phosphoglycerides extracted from vegetable oils and mixed with simple fats.
Lecithin is advertised as a slimming aid which is untrue since it is fattening and large amounts can contribute to obesity. This distorted notion is based on lecithin’s ability to transport fats around the bloodstream. It is, however, useless as far as slimming is concerned.
Other wild claims are that it provides strength, improves appetite, and aids memory - all of which have no scientific basis.
The latter is based on the fact that lecithin contains choline, a B-vitamin found in acetylcholine which is a neuro-transmitter or chemical substance released from the nerve endings. Since acetylcholine is involved in thought” processes, some people think they can improve their memory by taking lecithin.
“Unfortunately, careful studies with normal persons and those with memory deficits have not strongly supported the theory,” said Kurt Butler and Dr. Lynne Rayner of the University of Hawaii in “The Best Medicine.”
Lecithin is also believed to help lower blood cholesterol levels in some people. Rayner said 12 of 15 patients who took six tablespoons (36 grams) of lecithin granules daily for three months showed a striking decline in serum cholesterol of 41 percent.
Medical researchers, however, said the reason for this is not lecithin itself but linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid which is the product of lecithin digestion. In this case, it would be wiser to consume more vegetable oils which are rich sources of linoleic acid rather than rely on expensive lecithin supplements.

Dr. Agatston who wanted to improve the cholesterol level and insulin levels in his patients who have heart disease created the South Beach Diet Plan. Very similar to the Atkins Diet, it is commonly known as updated version, where a similar doctor did a similar thing for his patients who needed surgery. LIFE STYLE DIET
The South Beach Diet is more of a lifestyle diet encouraging people to keep fit maintain health and facilitate weight loss. The diet teaches you to rely on the right types of carbohydrates and the right types of fat. These particular groups are called good carbs and good fats. The result is a definite loss of weight loss and lowering of cholesterol levels. Along with the reduction in insulin levels, it creates a longer long term life changing effect where the reduction of heart disease and diabetes are common with high insulin levels. Try to explain to anyone that a VLED (Very Low Energy Diet) is fun or simple. Tormenting is never fun, is it? Well, you know the old saying, ‘no pain, no gain’. When it comes to calorie shifting and weight loss it is completely true. No pain and you don’t gain…any weight.
Most popular diets are based on the exclusion of a certain dietary group, like fat or carbohydrates.
I know that it seems easy to follow but have you ever tried it? I was on the infamous Atkins diet for 2 months and sure I lost weight but I have never been so deprived in my entire dieting life. It felt like I was about to kill someone for a simple apple. I was in ketosis and checked this daily through urine samples. My husband didn’t want any intimacy because he said I smelled like nail polish remover. Not fun and even more depressing. Well, I lost weight but there were a lot of pain involved.
I have tried weight-watchers and I have to say that they are great but expensive and it takes forever to lose weight. Other than that I felt great while dieting and calculating points. It is definitely a great diet to stay fit but still, it requires a lot of money and that is a shame with such a great diet.
Have you ever tried low calorie diets or VLED? They really put you to the test so if you like to be challenged this is it. Remember that you will lose weight during the first days and once your metabolism decides that you are starving it preserves the energy it has stored. If you are disciplined and stay on the diet for another couple of weeks you start to lose weight again. Our body is greedy, ,well not greedy, but rational with its resources.
It likes to have a reserve of fat and instead use lean muscle mass for energy. Losing muscle means a decreased need for energy and less fat burning tissue. Not to smart, or what do you think? On the other hand, if you have the discipline a defy your screaming body and do exercise you will lose fat. Lots of pain and only a small gain.
This is some of the diets I have tested and didn’t feel good with. Of course I was about to find the diet that helped lose 50 pounds (not, yet but I only have a few pounds left to go). I read an ad about the calorie shifting diet. It was explained as a minor miracle (as always…). Well, the last idiot isn’t born so I was hooked after reading a short explanation to the diets principles. The diet is supposedly manipulates your metabolism. When we eat there are two hormones controlling how much of the dietary fats that are to be used for energy and fats meant to be burned. If we want to lose weight we want less fat to be stored and much fat to be torched. Ok, so how do we achieve this?
There are a few ways, you could exercise in order to increase the need for energy, and if you follow a special exercising program this could really boost the fat burning process. If you are not interested in exercising you should go for the calorie shifting method. The method is a way to fool the metabolism.
Basically your metabolism bases its usage of dietary fats on what you ate the previous days. This gives us the opportunity to fool the metabolism into expecting one thing and instead we give it another. It is as easy as that. I have been on 7 cycles and lost 35 pounds so far. I have tried to change into a more active lifestyle and I hope that this will help me keep my new weight. Of course I have learned a lot about physiology during my dieting and I hope that this alone will help me keep my weight.
