Confessions Of A Twitter Pinger

Yes. It's true. I Ping my Twitter.

I have a dirty little secret. Sometimes, when I'm all alone and playing with my blog, I have the irresistible urge to ping my twitter. It's so satisfying, I suspect it must be immoral. I've tried to quit, but the urge is overpowering, especially when I experience the titillation of a really good twitter ping.

Oh, I know what you're thinking, but it's okay. If you'll allow me, I'll ping your twitter, too. I'm really good at it and I think you'll like the way it makes you feel as much as I do.

Don't worry. Pinging your twitter is perfectly legal. It's even encouraged by some internet evangelists. Here's the way it works.

1. I make a post to my SEO blog or change something significant on my website

2. I login to twitter and let my followers know that I've just updated my blog/website and include the URL to the blog post

3. I go to one of the numerous pinging websites like ping or autopinger and follow the simple steps to ping my twitter blog

That's it. It's quite. You can do it, too. Here's how this little procedure works and what it does for you.

Search engine spiders are always on the hunt for new information. If your site or blog doesn't change all that often, the spiders won't visit frequently and it can take a while for search engines to store your new site data. However, they spend a lot of time at websites that regularly have new information -- twitter, for example. If there are links in that content, they will follow them to see what other good tidbits of info they can find at the new place.

By using a pinging service like ping, I ensure over 50 weblog services and blog directories know my twitter blog has been updated. Search engine spiders spend a lot of time at blog directories, too, increasing the chances of a spider visiting my twitter blog and following the link I left there to my latest blog post or site update.

If I don't ping my twitter, it can take up to 2 months for my site to be indexed by Google. But when I ping my twitter, my blog is often indexed in as few as 15 minutes. That gets me really excited, which is why I've got this addiction.

So there you are. My dirty little secret is out. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose, except about 60 days in Google's sandbox.

Have fun pinging your twitter.
