Christmas, with it's abundance of delicious goodies, parties and family gatherings can be a particularly difficult time of the year for those who are trying to lose weight. Many dieters cave in to the temptation and regret the extra pounds when January rolls around.

Other's do without and end up feeling deprived and miserable.

Holiday weight-gain is far from inevitable, and the best part is that you can still enjoy this season to the fullest, even if you're watching your waistline.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy Christmas without feeling deprived or ditching your weight loss attempts.

Amp up the exercise. Burn off the extra calories you're taking in by doing more exercise. Exercise early in the morning before the day's commitment's side-track you. And try to fit in a 30 minute walk in the evening or after a heavy meal.

Take the focus off food. Switch the focus to people and activities. Plan enjoyable activities that center around non-food activities such as a family football game, arrange a karaoke machine at the office party, having a holiday movie marathon etc.

Take steps to prevent emotional over-eating. The holiday season is one time of the year that is filled with emotions, not all of which are positive. Disagreements with relatives, being alone, the stress of family get-togethers' can send you straight to the fridge. If you are an emotional eater, take heart. Here are some alternatives to coping with this stressful time of the year:

Take a walk whenever the weather permits. Fresh air and exercise can lift sagging spirits and leave you feeling a whole lot more cheerful.
Attend holiday functions, such as concerts, parades, etc to keep you in a festive mood.
Volunteer to help those less fortunate.
Eat balanced meals throughout the day. NEVER allow yourself to get too hungry.
    Keep up the exercise.
Keep stress in check. A soothing bubble bath, some relaxing music etc. will help.
Get enough sleep. This may mean cutting down on TV/Computer/hobby time. The extra demands placed on you during this season means that something has to give. Don't let it be your sleep.
And most of all enjoy this season to the fullest.
