The bone-crushing pain associated with gout attacks can become intolerable. In such cases, following medications may help.
Injection of a steroid or non-steroid anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs can alleviate the pain.
Application of an FDA-approved topical analgesic spray, gel, cream, or lotion to the affected sites deadens the nerve-endings below the skin and provides respite from the pain. These over-the-counter medicines should however be administered only after reading any directions that might be provided with it.
The doctors usually prescribe drugs like Indomethacin, Colchicine, or Prednisone. However, these medicines should be taken only when advised by the doctor because of their serious side effects. In circumstances when consulting a doctor is not possible, over-the counter NSAIDs like Ibuprofen or Naproxen may be used.
Acetaminophen and aspirin should be avoided at all costs. These further the suffering. Aspirin triggers the release of uric acid it is the accumulation of this metabolic byproduct that leads to gout. So aspirin will only worsen the condition.
Consumption of acidic foods and drinks, carbonated drinks, loop and thiazide diuretics, niacin and vitamin C can protract the attack.
Some sufferers of gout vouch that the intake of half a teaspoon full (almost 2.5 grams) of baking soda with a glass of water five to six times a day in empty stomach helps in eradicating the symptoms of gout. There is however no medical evidence to support this observation. Possible side effect may include temporary rise in the blood pressure. So during this therapy consumption of salt should be diminished.
Consuming 30 to 40 cherries or dark-colored berries or their juice every 4 hours or so can successfully cure the attack. This is because these food items contain anthocyanins that are anti-inflammatory in nature.
Fruits like oranges, tomatoes, cranberries and pineapples are high in acid content and thus accentuate the pain in gout attacks.
Warm water baths can help ease the pain. Cold compress can temporarily numb the joints but once the affected sites become one again, the conditions become even worse.
Plenty of rest is imperative during the gout attacks. At this time the joints remain tender and over-use may worsen the attack.
Remove the shoes, socks, or clothing from the attack sites and avoid any stress on them.
Soak the attack site in warm water to soothe the pain; cold water may temporary numb the pain but will worsen the gout once the attack sites warm up.
Elevate the attack sites above the heart level to help drain the body fluids and relieve the pain.
